Single Parent Allowance Program

Introduction

The Single Parent Allowance program is a targeted conditional cash transfer program implemented under the Social Protection Act (2/2014), providing financial support to vulnerable single parents caring for their children, so as to protect and improve the lives of the children and provide access to equal opportunities as other children in the society.

Benefit Amount

Eligible single parents registered in the program are paid a monthly allowance of MVR 1000 per child (below 18 years of age), up to a maximum of MVR 10,000.

Applying for the Allowance

  • To apply, fill the Single Parent Allowance Program Application Form and submit the form along with the required documents to NSPA
  • Application forms are available at NSPA’s counters and from island/atoll Councils. It can also be downloaded via NSPAs website.
  • Where to submit the form:
    • To NSPA Front Office (Ma. Dhonveli), during weekdays 8:00am to 2:00pm
    • To NSPA Dispatch Counter at IGMH, service hours: 8:00am to 9:00pm, 7 days a week

Once a completed application is received to NSPA, a decision will be informed to the applicant via SMS within 15 working days of submission of application form.

  1. Copy of National Identity Card of the applicant, children under his/her care, and household members under the care of the applicant.
  2. Copy of Birth certificate of applicant’s child, if child is above 10 years and without a legal father
  3. Copy of the household’s most recent Electricity bill
  4. Copy of the Vaccination card (if child is below 6 years of age)
  5. Applicant’s bank account statement for the past three months (account holder name and number should be printed clearly).
  6. If the applicant is divorced, copy of all the pages of the divorce certificate (copy of all pages shall be included).
  7. If the applicant is male, a letter from the Court stating that he is unmarried.
  8. If the applicant is a widow:
    • Copy of the death certificate of the spouse
    • Copy of their marriage certificate (all pages shall be included)
  9. If the spouse of the applicant is imprisoned:
    • A letter from Maldives Correctional Service stating the length of the sentence
    • Copy of their marriage certificate (all pages shall be included)
  10. If the applicant is renting a place, copy of the rental agreement specifying the rental amount.
  11. If the applicant is employed, an official document specifying the salary and benefits received
  12. If the applicant has taken a loan, an official document regarding this issued from relevant authorities or by a Court

  1. Applicant should be a single parent caring for own children below 18 years of age
  2. Applicant’s Monthly income must be below the poverty/income cutoff set by NSPA
  3. Applicant must not be currently married
  4. Children listed in the application should be living with the Applicant
  5. Three months should have passed since the registration of divorce (not applicable to widows)
  6. Applicant should not be permanently residing outside of Maldives.

  1. Child must be a Maldivian citizen
  2. Regular attendance to school (for school aged children)
  3. Must have received all vaccinations as per the national guideline (for children below 6 years)

  1. If the Applicant’s spouse is serving a sentence of more than 6 months and Applicant qualify under all other conditions
  2. If the child is living away from the Parent for studies
  3. If the child is living away from the Parent due to medical reasons
  4. If the Parent is living away from the Child due to medical reason
  5. If the Parent is living away from the Child due to work/employment

If the application form is incomplete, a notification is given to complete the form within 1 month. All incomplete forms will be cancelled after 1 month. A new application can be submitted again to request for the allowance.

Once application forms are received to NSPA, an SMS confirming receipt of application will be sent to the Applicant’s mobile number with the form reference/entry number

Applicants who are Approved for the Program will receive the allowance from the month of Approval. Payments will be deposited to the bank account specified in the Applicant form before the 10th of every month

  1. Change in monthly income received by the beneficiary
  2. Beneficiary (single parent) marries
  3. Child marries or becomes employed
  4. Child becomes 18 years of age
  5. Change in guardianship of the child
  6. Poor attendance without a valid reason (for school-aged children)
  7. Death of the child or single parent
  8. Child is taken into state care
  9. Imprisoned spouse being released from prison
  10. Migration of the child and applicant to another island
  11. Sources of income and support for child care expenses change
  12. Applicant violates any criteria for continuation of Allowance
